finally it seems winter has hit us

sniffly nose and all

surfing with dolphins

early friday morning: 25.02.2011

i was picked up at 5am, with a sense of urgency to get out to the east

coast; there was the big, clean, tail end of a tropical

cyclone swell hurrying us along our way.

mike, chris & i drove up to mangawhai heads, just as we got to

the bar we could see it was pumping, even in the morning's darkness.

just as the sun was coming up we were paddling out. with

the view of perfect 4 foot oily-glass waves peeling over the bar

as we got out the back we were all

startled to see a big fin coming towards us.

only to be relieved, and excited to see more fins,

which were a pack of big hector dolphins.

they were swimming around our feet, and playing in the waves as we

caught them, and as you duck dived through waves we could hear

them talking with each other. chris snapped his board on his first wave.

just as he did, and held the 1 foot that was left of his board

out of the water, a dolphin leaped out of the water 10 feet

through the back of the wave.

i was pretty wrapped I had my underwater

film camera with me, in the back of my wetsuit.

here are a few shots of what I got as the sun was coming up,

and of a 'secret' spot we surfed later in the day.

we surfed 3 times that day.

went for an eye exam this morning, got some
new glasses and came out with a cd with two
jpegs with each of my eye balls on it.
Its looks a little like a hubble
telescope photograph of a far away planet.

i just went down and checked out yayoi kusama's exhibition
at the wellington city gallery. kusama's works blew me away
and i wasn't expecting it to be so over oaring. mirrored years presents
seminal works from the 1960s and 1970s alongside more recent work. It
contains such a mix for the eye, from large scale silk screen paintings
to interactive instillations.

if your in wellington, i truly recommend the show
to anyone who enjoys captivating art. kusama's instillation's
are bound to astonish even the most skeptical audience.

...the second picture shows of one of the works, installed in tokyo. this
shows the poker dot room joined. we missed the black wall
yellow spot room and got lost! make sure you get into the
yellow/black and black/yellow rooms!! amazing

a must!

i went and watched this last night at paramount. was a bit
of an eye opener in how we aren't really doing anything
about global warming even though we know so much about
it. some cool case studies from perspectives you wouldn't
usually see. a couple of kids in iraq, a wind turbine activist
in the uk, and a cool old guide from france. well worth a
visit.

Nice ride last night. the first of many. Met Civic Square, Courtenay lap,
rode along to Featherston st, through town then around the bays,
past the airport, Lyall bay, short hill climb into Newtown,
Southern Cross for a beer. Awesome ride.

through an elaborate setup on his mac, ableton, a mixer, a trigger finger
and a whole bunch of talent. i took this image of him last year
when he was playing on cdjs, now he sticks to a more full on
set up with a trigger finger and all thats complicated.

i'm doing a dancer assignment at uni at the moment
and was looking at some clips on vimeo for some inspiration
i came across this guy randomly. so crazy, he travels the world
and dances in different iconic spots. this simian one is funny
but there are a tone of other sweet ones, great time wasters
have a gander, number 5 and 34 are sweet too. some good
songs amongst the mix.

i just got sent the layout for the spread in geo magazine
in germany, as a part of the urban workshop. the geothe institut
were good enough to organize it all for us. hopefully a few copies
get sent to our shores. pretty stoked, as geo has a print run
of around 200,000 copies
